BROWN SUGAR

Tanzania’s brown sugar production is as follows:
  • Production
In the 2023/24 crop season, Tanzania produced around 368,000 tons of brown sugar, which was below the target of 555,000 tons.

  • Consumption
The Tanzania Sugar Board estimated that the country’s annual demand for brown table sugar was 481,000 tons.

  • Government plans
The government of Tanzania aims to double the country’s sugar production, with a target of one million tons by 2030. The government is also encouraging investors to expand sugar factories and increase the amount of land used for sugarcane.

Brown sugar is made by partially purifying raw sugar from sugar cane or sugar beet. It can also be made by spraying refined sugar with molasses or sugar syrup, and then drying it. The amount of molasses in brown sugar determines whether it is light or dark, with darker sugars containing more molasses.
